"The balance cock was invented around 1490. It is a part that protects and holds the balance wheel of portable watches. It is generally placed on the back of the movement. It was therefore invisible except when the back of the case was opened. Most balance cocks are filigreed, in order to allow the regulator to be seen in operation. In watches from the 16th to the 19th centuries, great importance was placed on the fine workmanship and delicacy of the parts visible in the movement."
